Founded in 1879, Ocean City has evolved from a conservative religious campground into one of the leading family resorts in the country. Featuring eight miles of beautiful beach, three miles of boardwalk, and the most shuffleboard courts north of Florida, Ocean City has maintained its wholesome, family traditions and enhanced them with an array of special events, entertainment and recreational activities.

Ocean City, a major destination along New Jersey's "Southern Shore", has been carefully designed for the safety and entertainment of vacationing families. It covers an island at the northernmost end of Cape May County, between the Atlantic Ocean, Peck's Harbor and Great Egg Harbor.

Often the key to a good resort is it's core of year around residents. Their commitment to a healthy community means well maintained city services, clean, secure beaches and a long calendar of special events.

To protect its family image, Ocean City has turned away from the nightclub scene. Ocean City is a dry community where liquor can be comsumed, but not purchased. The city strives to provide a wide variety of activities for both adults and children, and succeeds on every count.

One of the major attrcations is the famous Ocean City Boardwalk which includes a Music Pier featuring summer concerts of all types. The rest of the boardwalk is lined with gift shops, small restaurants, miniature golf, arcades, malls, a food court, specialtly foods and amusements, and it follows a beautiful stretch of clean, golden-white sand for safe bathing.

Ocean City has a sense of community which has continued through the generations, and it stands
as the centerpiece of the town today. You can see it in the steeples of the churches of every denomination. You can see it in the service volunteers from over 100 civic associations.
You can see it in the dedication to the community's well-being that governs the town,
and you can see it in the smiles of families who reside in this village by the sea,
and on the faces of the visitors who return year after year.
At the hub of it's special activities is Ocean City's historic Music Pier, constructed in 1926. Completely enclosed for year around programs, the Ocean City Music Pier is the home of the Ocean City "Pops" Orchestra. These concerts are complemented by a full schedule of seasonal entertainment including Philadelphia String Bands, beauty pageants, choral groups and such entertainers as the Pitman Hobo Band.
In June the pier is the site of the Ocean City Flower Show, LuLu Temple weekend, Artisans weekend and Baseball Card show.
Special events are a specialty of Ocean City with the Festival of Venice Boat Parade and bay celebration attracting over 100,000 visitors. This is one of the largest boat parades in the world with over 130 boats sailing and bayfront and lagoonfront homes decorated for the occasion.

There is also a Baby Parade, Boardwalk Art Show and many craft shows.

This family resort is also noted for it's unusual special events, which include the Miscellaneous Sun Tanning Tournament, the annual Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant and crab races, Artistic Pie Eating Contest, French Fry Sculpting Contest, Doo Dah Parade, Twins Contest, Freckle Contest and many others. Ocean City's recreational facilities are widely used year around and feature a municipal golf course, tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, volleyball, surfing, indoor and outdoor basketball, boating and fishing.

A Sports and Civic center provides indoor sports facilities and a community center houses an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Ocean City NJ's boardwalk, one of the most popular on the Jersey shore, includes gift shops, small restaurants, miniature golf courses, arcades, malls a food court, specialty foods and the Music Pier which extends out over the ocean at Moorlyn Terrace.

Shoppers in Ocean City NJ have both the boardwalk and downtown area for browsing. A bustling center-city shopping area is noted for it's specialty stores and personal service.

Ocean City's activities continue year-around with an October Indian Summer weekend featuring a downtown block party and boardwalk sale,a seafood festival, and the annual Spring Block Party.

Other special activities in Ocean City include a June family celebration and a July jubilee capped by a huge fireworks display on the Fourth of July. The Music Pier is the site of year-around entertainment with dances and big band concerts held during the winter.
Just twenty minutes from the Atlantic City casinos and ninety from Philadelphia, Ocean City is perfectly situated for people who want to escape metropolis without losing easy access to
exciting nightlife.

Since 1992, beach replenishment has been credited with saving millions of dollars in property damage against the ravages of coastal storms. A 50 year agreement with the Corps calls for scheduled replenishment of the City's beaches every three years.
